Camphor laurel grows in Australia but it is an introduced species originating in Japan, Taiwan and parts of China. It has prolific seed production and grows rapidly in many areas where it has taken over native vegetation. In northern New South Wales, along the east coast, the trees are controlled and often removed and replaced with native trees. The timber is beautiful and value adding to this resource is encouraged. This makes it a coveted material for woodworkers looking for a decorative, workable timber. The wood has a distinct fragrance and with its antibacterial properties makes it suitable as a cutting board and for serving food.
