About Tiwi Design
Tiwi Design fabrics are hand silkscreen by the master printers of Tiwi Design on Bathurst Island, northern Australia. Each printed fabric is unique and shows the mark of the handmade. Small imperfections are normal.
Tiwi Design is one of the oldest and most artistically diverse art centres in Australia. In addition to handprinted fabrics, they produce ochre paintings on canvas and bark, ironwood carvings, ceramics and sculptures. The aim of the organisation is to promote, preserve and enrish the unique Tiwi culture.
Maria Josette Orsto (nee Apuatimi) was the first female Tiwi artist to become an official member of Tiwi Design, one of the oldest Aboriginal art centres in Australia.
